Top health and wellbeing trends

Last week saw Google reveal the top 10 most searched diets across the globe, but “diets” only tell a tiny bit of the story on what is trending when it comes to health and wellbeing. This year, the top five concerns and interests for health and wellness include energy boosting, food intolerance, general wellbeing, digestive health, and beauty from within, according to Arlor Natural Scientific.

While the top trending diets this year on Google were Paleo Diet and Atkins Diet, people are now ditching restrictive diets in favour of healthy, sustainable ones. “When it comes to weight management, consumers have taken a dramatic departure from deprivation-style weight loss diets by simply eating healthier and adding specific real food components and/or nutrients,” says Arlor Natural Scientific export manager Charlotte Goldstein. Bioglan general manager Steve Brandt agrees, revealing “consumers are gravitating back to cooking healthy meals and snacks to better their health.”

As well as enjoying a healthy diet, people are also embracing natural, food-based solutions, according to Naturopathica category manager Stuart Boag. “Consumers are progressively looking more to nature as a means of attaining health and wellbeing. This trend includes supplements and foods leveraging the power of nature, from raw, unprocessed wholefoods and superfoods to the highest quality herbal extracts for symptomatic relief,” says Nature’s Way general manager Raphael Cohen.

Digestive health dominated the health and wellness arena this year, and is set to continue to rear its head in the new year. “There is going to be increased focus on the importance of gut health in 2015,” says Brandt. Cohen adds: “Consumers are looking to build their immunity and digestive health. Probiotics are becoming increasingly more relevant as consumers want to stay healthy to cope with their progressively busy and demanding lives.”
