Tips for mastering the perfect flat lay

Whether it’s photographing your travel essentials, shopping haul, beauty favourites or even your enviable workspace, we’ve all been there – standing on a chair, bending over backwards struggling to get the perfect flat lay shot.

So, we asked four industry experts for their tops tips and tricks for mastering the perfect flat lay.

#1 Keep it simple

The babe behind Poppy’s Babble, Stephanie Gardner believes the trick is to “Keep it simple - if there's too many clashing colours, too many products or not enough blank space, it can be hard for a viewer to grasp what the purpose of the flat lay is. Find the purpose, whether it be a colour theme, a product, an event or yourself, and make that the focus.”

#2 Cohesion

Miss FQ Editor Skye Ross says, “Keep everything tonal. Clashing has its place in fashion, but not where flat lays are concerned, IMO. If the focus of your photo is a pretty collection of pink lippies, complementing them with flowers and accessories of a similar hue will ensure your picture looks cohesive and polished.”

#3 Lighting

The dynamic sister duo Christel and Camille Hansen, better known as , believe “Lighting is EVERYTHING! Natural is best, so set up next to a window. If shadows are an issue, try shooting on a cloudy day.”

#4 Contrast

Contrast is key says Beauty Lust founder Stephanie Munro, "I find that combining a clean and simple shot with a textured background works every time!"
