Alexander Wang is bringing back hair accessories

Last year we saw the unassuming scrunchie’s ascent back into popularity following Mansur Gavriel’s Spring 2018 presentation; and now it seems that thanks to cool kid Alexander Wang, the banana clip is about return to our hair styling arsenal as well.

Models took to the runway for his 80s CEO-themed fall 2018 show with claw clips in their hair – all chrome finished and stamped with the Alexander Wang logo.

Speaking with Harper’s BAZAAR, lead hairstylist and Redken creative director Guido Palau said: "The hair is take on a power executive of the 80s. It's corporate and kind of smart in a way. This is Alex's take on the ironic banana clip of that era."

Speaking on his personal thoughts on the clip, Palau noted: "I love the way that something that's been around and has a funny connotation can come back. Look at the mullet haircut: three or four years ago it was a no-no, and now it's super cool. I love the way that something is reintroduced into fashion and we look at it again in a different way. That's been happening for a while now, things that were considered not cool or a bit of can be rejigged again.

"Also, you've got to remember, lots of girls probably don't remember what the banana clip is. There's an 18 or 17-year-old girl, they don't know it has a funny connotation to it. They may just think it's super cool to do that in their hair."

Wang wasn’t the only designer to spruik hair accessories. Bottega Veneta saw models clip back their hair with embellished hair slides, and Tom Ford sent out models with thick leather headbands.

And so as what was once old is new, hair accessories are definitely back.
