The hair trends that dominated the A/W shows

From sculptural styles to masculine moments the autumn/winter 2019 shows served up some serious inspiration for the months ahead. Across London, Milan, New York and Paris fashion week shows, a mix of masculine and feminine reigned supreme on the catwalk this season.

“This season on the runway we’ve seen a real shift in style, which is a breath of fresh air – for so long we have seen hair that is loose, wavy and beachy with a one-size-fits all approach. We’ve seen hair that is much more punchy which we haven’t seen for a long time. People are mixing up styles, pushing hair into a real new contemporary moment,” says international session stylist, Brent Lawler.

Taking a closer look at this season’s dominating hair trends, KMS shows us how to recreate each style.

Masculine styling

With deep and strong side parts, hair was slicked back and all business at the Thom Browne show in New York. Try: KMS HAIRPLAY Styling Gel to ensure every strand stays in place.

Ethereal femininity

In Paris, Valentino sent models down the runway with hair styled in a mix of feminine and masculine. Hair was pulled back tightly and gelled into a chignon, with a small section of hair left out along the hairlines to create soft framing. A similar style was seen on the runway at Yohji Yamamoto.

To recreate this look:

1. Take a section of hair between ½ to 1 inch along the hairline, and pull all remaining hair into a tight ponytail, resting right between the crown & nape of the neck.

2. Dampen hair & apply KMS HAIRPLAY Styling Gel liberally (leaving the front section out) to give the hair a strong wet-look and keep it in place.

3. Twist hair & secure pony tail with bobby pins to create a chignon.

4. Brush out front section with a fine tooth comb to create a fine feminine softness, with almost a halo effect.  A blow dryer can also be used following this to enhance the windswept look.

5. Finish the front section with a spritz of KMS HAIRSTAY Anti-Humidity Seal to keep humidity at bay.

Sculptural avant garde

Sculptural styling was seen at Burberry’s London Fashion Week show, where models showcased wet, high-shine, ornate and detailed hair framing the face.

Hair embellishments

Hair embellishments are back in a big way, from subtle to oversized. On the catwalk we saw unusual materials, clever placements and hair accessory layering.

Embellished barettes: Monogrammed, crystal, or bow-shaped, clips and barettes are making a comeback. This time, they’re being placed jauntily above temples and over deep side parts. Try: Mita Star Bobbypins Pk 2

Try: KMS HAIRPLAY Sea Salt Spray for a backcombing effect that will help the clip stay in place.

Minimalist grips: For a more simplistic style use plain silver or gold grips. For an elevated look, slide several into hair just above your ear. Try: Mita Contour Bobby Pins - Blonde

Claw grips: These clips are a 90s throwback and were all over the catwalks. Try: Mita Claw Grip

Zig zag hair combs: Another blast from the past, these stretchy hairbands are making a sophisticated comeback. Try: Mita Metal Band – Plain
