A mask for every task

Any self-confessed beauty fanatic is armed with a plethora of face masks for each and every occasion. Whether it’s acne that needs tackling, dry skin that needs sorting, or pores that need unclogging, they are the ultimate pamper device. We take a look at all the different types of masks and what they do best.

Brighten with sheet masks

Cloth or sheet masks offer an array of benefits depending on the one you choose, but perhaps the most appealing effect is healthy and hydrated skin inspired by the K-Beauty phenomenon. The Korean skincare routine is famous for being extensive, but luckily using a sheet mask a couple times a week requires minimal effort while giving maximum glow. A sheet mask’s hydrating seal more effectively delivers active ingredients to the skin’s deepest layers, meaning this is a good option if you need a quick moisture hit.

Detoxify with clay masks

Masks utilising clay or mud will treat clogged pores and congestion, absorb excess oil and refine skin. Ideal for oily or acne-prone types, a gentle clay mask gets rid of impurities and toxins without harsh scrubbing – just don’t leave it on for too long, otherwise it will strip the skin of its natural oils. Mud masks can also be applied to the T-zone as a specific treatment for oil control, and then while you’re at it, apply a more hydrating mask to other areas for a more personalised pamper.

Hydrate with cream masks

Undeniably the most traditional of all face masks, cream or gel wash-off formulas are the ultimate hydrator. A cream mask is one that is easy, affordable and readily available from most brands. Best suited for normal to dry skin, they can be used more frequently and are the ultimate all-rounder; revitalising and rejuvenating, boosting brightness and overall appearance. They can also be used as a more intense moisturiser or left on overnight.

Rejuvenate with exfoliating masks

Stashed in the beauty cabinet especially for when skin tone is uneven and lacklustre, exfoliating masks come in several forms but are best categorised by chemical or mechanical. Some have a peeling effect, some use AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) to polish skin, and some contain a physical exfoliator to remove dead skin cells. Whatever the method, exfoliating masks will resurface dull skin and increase brightness, resulting in a smoother complexion.

Save time with sleep masks

An overnight mask will do all the hard work for you while you’re sleeping. Most commonly used to boost hydration, these leave-on masks are potent enough to replace night creams while providing additional benefits. With our busy lifestyles taking a toll on skin, you’d be silly not to take advantage of them – it’s called ‘beauty sleep’ for a reason!

De-puff with eye masks

Dark under eyes are a tell-tale sign you’ve had a few too many late nights – luckily there’s a solution for that. Available as gel patches or a cream, they are designed specifically for the delicate under eye area and are formulated to target early-morning puffiness, dark circles and fine lines.  If hard-pressed for time, apply them to under eyes for 5-10 minutes while doing your eye makeup.
