BD Talks: How to fight static hair

Static hair...It's the bane of our spring existence. The combination of cold and warm erratic weather sees our strands turn into some sort of science project.

Harsh conditions like cold and wind strip the cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair strand), making it rough and susceptible to dryness and static. Now spring is here and the New Zealand weather doesn't know what it's up to, your mane is most likely at an all time low. But this season, we’re putting our feet and flyaway hairs down. We vow to fight static with every weapon we’ve got in our arsenal.

But first, how does static work?

Many don’t know, but all hair is made up of atoms, and atoms are made up by protons, neutrons and electrons. So when electrons move from one atom to another the atoms become positively charged, which causes static.
With that said, there's no need to hibernate until summer, below are some tried-and-tested tips on preventing the dry, static-prone hair that's all-too-common during these winter months.

Be gentle with your wet locks
Rough, damaged hair cuticles will be more prone to static so it’s important not to make it worse using a course towel on wet hair. Micro-fibre towels are definitely the best option. As for haircare, go for a shampoo that’s both strengthening and adds moisture to dry locks and add a restorative serum to your aftercare regime.

Top tools

The wrong hair tools can make even well-moisturised hair wild on a whim. Bio-ionic brushes are great as they contain Nanolonic Complex which emits natural negative ions into the hair to smooth and seal the hair. A hairdryer with conditioning technology will also help release more ions to give a frizz free shine. And if you want to go the extra mile, protect hair while you sleep by investing in a soft silk pillowcase.

Pamper strands once a week
Hydration is the key! We recommend a weekly deep conditioning treatment to restore hair back to its former glory. Look for formulas that have hair repairing properties.

Treat hair with the good oils
It just might be the best multi-functional product you're missing. Not only do hair oils add shine by replenishing the lipid layer on the surface of the hair, but they make dry, brittle hair look like a healthier version of itself. For a quick fix for those annoying wisps or static flyway’s, rub a tiny bit of oil between your fingertips then smooth over any stray hairs or frizzy spots. Pre-shampoo oils are on the rise and are amazing as a regenerating overnight hair masque.

Hairpsray tip!

Spray your brush and run it through damp hair. Then, blow-dry, style, spritz the brush again and swipe it through one last time.
