ghd talks festival hair trends

Coachella is done and dusted, but there is still plenty more of the festival season to look forward to. To help you get up to speed with the latest festival trends, ghd creative artists have revealed what’s hot in the world of hair, as seen on influencers and celebrities at Coachella 2019.

Hair chains and rings

ghd creative artist Sam Cusick explains hair chains have been rife at Coachella this year, a trend inspired by Balmain and Christina Siriano AW19 fashion week shows. Whether adorned and plaited into a braid, or added throughout the hair to jazz up a pony, this trend is all about embracing hair’s natural texture and maintaining movement.

Tip: Style hair before adding accessories. Cusick recommends creating loose waves with the ghd festival platinum styler, and then dressing the hair with accessories once the waves have cooled and set.

Hair rings are another huge trend this year, worn by Ariana Grande in the past. A variety of styles adorned with metallic rings were seen at Coachella, including delicate and intricate rings woven into braids and added along partings.

Rainbow hues

Whether it's adding coloured hair extensions, braiding ribbon into the hair or using chalk spray as a quick fix, adding colour is a simple but effective way to mix up your festival look, ghd creative artist Patrick Wilson says.

Key hues seen at the festival included a mix of shocking blue and voodoo blue, ultra violet, neon green and hot pink.

Waves for days

Soft, loose waves were another popular trend seen at Coachella, creating a carefree and effortless appearance.

“Break the mould and forget about pristine perfection and let effortless styling be your staple this festival season,” Cusick says.

How-to:

1. Starting at the nape of the head, take a small horizontal section and place the ghd platinum+ festival styler facing downwards at the root of the hair.
2. Close the plates and rotate half a turn towards the back of the head and glide the styler through the hair.
3. Repeat the technique through the hair, alternating the direction of the curl by rotating the styler in the opposite direction each time for a more un-done look.
4. Once all the hair is styled, dress the hair by gently running your fingers through the waves.

Tip: Shake hair out with your fingers to create more of an effortless, textured look.
