OLAY launches its first-ever free recycling program

OLAY has today launched its first-ever free national recycling program for all-brands of skincare products. Australians can now ship back their used skincare empties for free - to be recycled through TerraCycle.

With 68 million facial skincare products sold in Australia[1] in the past year, OLAY’s program will provide an industry-wide solution for the majority of skincare products that are destined for landfill, giving skin care products a second life with TerraCycle.

General Manager of TerraCycle Australia, Jean Bailliard said the scale of the program is set to positively impact the environment.

“The main reason beauty products aren’t recyclable is due to the complex nature of the packaging. If you take a bottle of moisturiser, there might be one type of plastic for the bottle, a combination of plastic and metal for caps and a spring-loaded pump for functional use. The variety of materials makes it harder to recycle because the cost of labour required to manually identify, separate, clean and sort the components is too great.

“OLAY’s new program is set to make a significant difference for the environment by taking on the recycling of all brands of skincare products - a huge feat!”

The skin care products will be broken down in Australia and sold onto third-party manufacturers to be given new life as useful items such as garden furniture, bench tops and decking.

Endi Asmira Brand Director, Skin Care ANZ at OLAY said the new initiative follows a conscious move from the brand to take greater responsibility for the environment.

“As Australia’s leading skincare brand, we’re proud to be partnering with TerraCycle, to ensure empty skincare products don’t end up in landfill. Rather than throwing away empty cleanser, cream and toner containers, consumers can now ship them to TerraCycle for recycling for free.”

This program is part of Olay’s parent company, P&G Beauty’s Responsible 2030 goals to be 100% recyclable by 2030. By 2025, P&G Beauty aims to have 90% of its major packaging platform to be fully recyclable or reusable across its beauty brands.

HOW IT WORKS:

Consumers can recycle their used Olay product (or any skincare product) by consolidating their empties in any available box, creating an account with TerraCycle, then downloading and printing a free shipping label for the recycling program. Consumers can head to their nearest Australia Post Office to drop off the box.

Alternatively, consumers can also look for a TerraCycle Community Collection Hub to drop of their empty skincare products.

Plastic, glass pots, bottles, pumps, sprays, products with complex closures, flexible tubes, packets, pouches, lids, caps and droppers, can all be recycled via TerraCycle.

SkinCeuticals celebrates Vitamin C Day

To celebrate Vitamin C Day this April 4th, leading medical aesthetic skincare brand SkinCeuticals, wants Australian skincare consumers to understand the inherent differences found in the formulation and efficacy of vitamin C serums available on the market – as not all are created equally.

According to SkinCeuticals Scientific and Education Manager Dr Tania Romano, the difference from one vitamin C serum to another comes down to the parameters in which the vitamin C is formulated.

“Vitamin C is a highly potent antioxidant that, by its structure, has difficultly in effectively being absorbed by the skin,” said Dr Romano. “Without the correct balance within the formulation, the serum will not be effective – which means not all vitamin C serums are in fact created equally or guarantee superior, visible results.”

Backed by over 30 years of scientific research, SkinCeuticals vitamin C antioxidants are strictly formulated for enhanced efficacy, absorption and stability – with three specific serums available for different skin types – making it easy for customers to find and use the right product for them to target specific skin concerns. C E Ferulic targets visible ageing and is suitable for all skin types, Silymarin CF for oily or blemish-prone skin and Phloretin CF addresses discolouration and pigmentation and is suitable for normal to combination skin.
